Wednesday Photo Roudup (10/27/10)
Last weekend was simply epic (as predicted by our NYB weekend guide). So epic in fact that it has taken me until Wednesday to fully recover. Yikes! Here’s a look back…
Nathan “Bob” Jones turned in another stellar set of photos from Friday night’s neon madness at Hangfire. Special thanks to Matt Perry for engineering a mesmerizing light show. You can catch Aux Arc again this Friday at Hangfire with another great band – Sunglasses. You can also see them at the NYB Film Fest concert on November 4th with Cusses and Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun at Jinx (more propaganda coming soon). The full set of super glowy photos is available on Bob’s site. I suggest you take a look.
These don’t really belong here, but I felt you would want to see them. The Savannah Derby Devils are a fun time.
Did you know Bob Jones is available to photograph your birthday????????
Here we have some crappy iPhone pictures from Pat Longstreth. The “Satan is good” guy is my new favorite person. That’s Andrew Von Goellner singing London Calling at Jinx.
Stephanie Augello snapped a few shots of Magazine Avenue and These United States at Wormhole. I’m quite sad I missed this one. Stephanie had this to say:
“I showed up at around 10 PM, as my slowly-leaking rear bicycle tire hissed out its last breaths. The door to the club was ajar. From inside seeped a wailing voice set to a rhythm reminiscent of Brazilian Carnival music. Meet the opening act: Megan Jean & the KFB—a DIY gypsy duo out of Charleston, SC. Megan’s incredibleset of pipes were accompanied by a washboard, banjo, and stand-up bass. All of this added up to a gothic style, laden with intellect and hinting of the Dresden Dolls, Mark Twain and sheer honesty.
Savannah’s own Magazine Avenue was next in the line-up, filling the joint with youthful vigor and good cheer. They decorated the stage with balloons and even took a moment to wish vocalist and uke player, David Wardell, as well as some friends in the audience, a musical “Happy Birthday.”
Adam Arcuragi & the Lupine Choral Society further served to dominate our humble stage. In a January 2010 article, NPR stated that Adam’s voice is “…powerful, but without the unnecessary melodrama that encumbers so many talented singers.” The abilities of this symphonic ensemble were enough to render one speechless.
Such a group of able musicians molded the perfect segue into an engrossing performance by headliners These United States. As a unit, they were constantly in step and constantly in tune with their own sure-footed beat. This group filled the room with passion, poetry and a level of talent Savannah should feel fortunate to greet. They have a story to tell, and keep moving around individual stages throughout the country in an effort to share it with audiences. Frontman Jesse Elliott’s forearm is wrapped with venue wristbands – simple tokens of the road warrior lifestyle this band has embraced.
At the end of the night, I shared a few jokes with Elliott as the musicians sought out a friendly floor to crash on. With a fist pound and a smile I sent myself home, crossing my fingers that my now completely flat rear tire wouldn’t create a catastrophe. Old people need to hobble home before sunrise because, well, we need to sleep. Or in my case, stay up until 5 AM editing the night’s photographs.”
Tim Williams took great photos of Seersucker Live, another fantastic literary event in the basement of Moon River Brewing Company. A standing room only crowd was treated to a wide array of storytelling.
And last but not least we have some more contributions from Andrew Von Goellner. He had more than a few cool shots from the Aux Arc show.
But he’s been spending most of his time following around the Unchained Tour.
Before the big event at the River Club on Saturday. A group of SCAD writing students had their own little mini-Moth hosted by Dan Kennedy of McSweeney’s. I was quite impressed by this young group. Stories about hernias, Paganism, and bare-breast photo-copies had me laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair several times.
