SHOW DETAILS:

Date: Fri., November 18th
Time: 9:30 pm
Venue: The Jinx
Cost: $10
Ages: 21+ only with ID
Info: http://doddferrelle.com/

For the first time in several years, Savannah native and longtime Athens, Ga. resident DODD FERRELLE returns to his hometown for a special full-band rock show, courtesy of Knocked Out Loaded!

There’s no opening act for this special performance. Dodd and his new group will perform two full sets with an intermission in between, and their setlist will be drawn from across Dodd’s lengthy and critically acclaimed career.

Starting out in the late 1980s as the chief songwriter and frontman for the seminal Savannah alt-rock band ME ‘AN MILLS (one of the most popular original groups of their time in this area, which packed clubs and bars throughout the region and opened for many of their musical heroes), Dodd and his bandmates eventually relocated to the indie music capital of Ga., Athens to try their luck in a bigger market, but before long, that group had fallen apart.

He soon formed the fondly-remembered group RAGS, featuring bassist JON MILLS (a holdover from Me’ an Mills who’d later gain accolades as a member of WIDESPREAD PANIC side-project BARBARA CUE), keyboardist JASON ANDERSON (from the fabled honky-tonk outfit REDNECK GREECE DELUX, bluegrass-tinged revivalists THE JUDGE & THE JURY and later of Savannah’s iconic fuzz-garage septet SUPERHORSE), guitarist JOHN NEFF (an in-demand session musician who’s perhaps best known as a key member of Grammy-winning Southern Rock saviors THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS) and drummer DREW WORSHAM (late of Athens’ major label college rockers DREAMS SO REAL).

Once that group too had run its course (after releasing one highly collectible indie album), Dodd struck out on his own as a solo artist backed by a revolving cast of the better roots-rock and alt.country musicians from that fabled Southeastern arts mecca.

Billing his band as THE TINFOIL STARS, Ferrelle racked up heady praise from jaded critics, rapturous applause from club and theater crowds and immense respect from adventurous radio programmers worldwide.

Now, ten years after the release of his first solo album, Dodd Ferrelle returns to his hometown with a new band and perhaps the most polished and radio-friendly indie album of his career.

Produced by his longtime collaborative partner DAVID BARBE (who’s worked with BOB MOULD of HUSKER DU and SUGAR fame), HIDE THE WORLD is a major step forward for this rising star on the Americana scene who’s been embraced by such established taste-making outlets as PASTE MAGAZINE.

————

Here’s an award-winning animated video from Dodd’s new album HIDE THE WORLD:
Dodd Ferrelle – “Control”

Here’s the killer single “Sucker Punch Town” from HIDE THE WORLD:
Sucker Punch Town

And here’s a couple of live acoustic duo performances from a special session at PASTE Magazine’s offices:

(an original tune)
Dodd Ferrelle – “I Won’t Be Home”

(a cover by The Waterboys)
Dodd Ferelle “Fisherman’s Blues” live at Paste

————

Part STEVE EARLE, part JAYHAWKS, part ELVIS COSTELLO, part KEVN KINNEY, part TOM PETTY, part WILCO, part BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, part CONOR OBERST, part SON VOLT and part GASLIGHT ANTHEM, Dodd Ferrelle’s music is highly recommended for fans of progressive, bittersweet, jangly, roots-based rock and roll.

Copies of Dodd’s brand-new CD HIDE THE WORLD will be available for sale at the show (he’ll be happy to meet and autograph them), and we’ll have ear plugs for $1 each as well in case you are sensitive to volume or choose to protect your hearing.

————

PLEASE NOTE:

The Jinx only holds a little over 100 people, and they like to be able to have tickets available at the door for walk-up customers. With that in mind, we are only offering 40 advance tickets for this show (and several of these are already sold!).

They can be ordered via Paypal. Simply send $11 for each ticket (this includes the $10 ticket price plus a $1 fee to offset Paypal’s processing charges) to the username: lonesomefetter@hotmail.com

You’ll receive a confirmation email to let you know the transaction has gone through, and your name will be held at the door of the club. Present positive ID to receive your ticket(s).

IMPORTANT: It is entirely possible that this show may sell out and the club fill to capacity through walk-up sales. SO… If you purchase advance tix, we encourage you to arrive no later than 9:00pm. If you get there too late, the club may be filled to capacity. If that’s the case, you’d be required by Fire Code Law to remain outside until someone else leaves to make room for you.

Thanks for your understanding!

PLEASE SHARE THIS INVITE WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND WE’LL SEE YOU AT THE SHOW. :)

Of the many roots musicians traveling the world, spreading the early American music tradition, St. Louis musician and singer Pokey LaFarge is the next in line to make a significant impact on music enthusiasts everywhere. His creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing rings true and fine, making him one of the most innovative of all the purists performing American music today. It’s wonderfully infectious, and all laid down in front of a big, big swingin’ beat.

This will be a BYOB event. Grab a flask, or bring a bottle wine or some beer. We’ll have Soft drinks, mixers, cups, ice and all the fixin’s. Oh yeah, and where your dancing shoes; Pokey’s show is foot stompin’ fun!

Home and Abroad considers three artists’ perspectives on travel imagery as it relates to a sense of home and sense of self.

Elyzaveta Bateham translates the concept of home in a new light, viewing the commonplace as extraordinary. The photographs, recently shot in her home town in Ukraine, examine circumstances of daily life that are oceans away, but close to the heart.

Debra Zumstein’s technical approach to photography creates an immersive experience, with her compelling imagery sourced from local Bonaventure Cemetery, the exotic panoramas of Easter Island, and many places in between.

Jamie Kutner exhibits drawings inspired by a recent visit to New Zealand’s North Island. The images she presents possess a lunar quality, with figures roaming the inhospitable landscape of White Island, an active marine volcano.

Bike Porn is a collection of short erotic films made by inspired cyclists from all over the world. It is creative, clever, funny, and aware!

The Bike Porn Film Festival is now in its 5th year and has never been just a single person’s vision, rather, a coalition of the horny work together to bring this synthesis of transportation and sexuality to life.

The only way to see Bike Porn is when it plays in a theater, bike shop or basement for a live audience. There are no DVDs for sale and no screeners for the media.

Pikey Holdredge gives a shout out to a surprise hit from the festival.

 by Pikey Holdredge

Bernardo Nascimento presented his short film North Atlantic to a packed hall just before Michael Magidson’s Inuk on Friday at the Trustee’s Theatre. I had heard from other festival-goers who had seen the Tuesday presentation that I was in for something heavy… it was, unquestionably, the biggest understatement of the festival.

Based on actual events, North Atlantic drops the audience into a remote airstrip in the Azores, following the humdrum routine of Jim, a lonely air traffic controller. It seems like any other night for Jim until the radar blips to life.

Upon hailing the distant aircraft, Jim learns that the pilot has been low on fuel, flying blind after losing his guidance equipment in a lightning storm. Jim can correct his bearing, but nothing can be done about the fuel; Jim can only give an approximation of where the plane will crash to the rescue crafts in the area.

In the minutes that follow, Jim leaves the channel open for the pilot to say anything that crosses his mind, though empty air seems to dominate the interaction. Jim starts mindlessly strumming his guitar, however, and a percussive response comes through the airwaves. Another distant radio operator has joined the heavy conversation, if only to provide a few taps and snaps to the gentle strums of the guitar. The doomed pilot starts to whistle a melody. After a few moments, the three men – separated by hundreds of miles of ocean in all directions – are making music.

If that wasn’t enough to break every heart in the audience as they are swept up into the music only to watch the blip disappear from the radar screen, a title-card reveals that the doomed pilot had left a message in his crashed plane, thanking his friends in the North Atlantic for the music. Not a dry eye in the house.

What was most remarkable to me about Bernardo’s piece was that the truly simple shot design and music direction lent perfect authenticity to the story at hand; any more complexity, and I would have been drawn away from the stark realism; any less, and the production would have seemed unrefined. The music carried us away from dwelling on loss to the appreciation for life, no matter how fragile or short-lived it can be.

In any case, Bernardo came away with the festival’s award for Best Director of a Short Film, so I feel like his message was well-received, and the jam session was well-appreciated. In short: 9 out of 10 – Incredible.
